Seven Days Across Three Distinct Kenyan Worlds
Kenya rewards travellers who venture beyond the Mara. This 7-day itinerary introduces you to three completely different ecosystems. Samburu, in Kenya's arid north, offers a landscape of doum palms and the Ewaso Nyiro River, supporting species adapted to the dry country — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx and the long-necked gerenuk. Lake Nakuru, a classic Rift Valley soda lake, is a rhino sanctuary with flamingos and the rare Rothschild's giraffe. And the Maasai Mara — three unforgettable nights in the reserve that defines the African safari dream.

Three nights in the Mara gives you six game drives, allowing you to explore different sectors of the reserve at different times of day. You have time to follow a cheetah across the plains, to wait at a leopard's tree, to watch a lion pride as the cubs play in the golden late-afternoon light. This is not a checklist safari. It is a week-long immersion in the wild heart of Kenya.

Itinerary

Day 01

Nairobi to Samburu — Into the Wild North

Morning collection from Nairobi. Drive north through the central highlands, crossing the equator at Nanyuki. The landscape shifts from green farmland to the arid beauty of Kenya's northern frontier. Arrive at Samburu National Reserve for a late lunch. Afternoon game drive: Samburu's unique 'Special Five' — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk — are found here and nowhere else in Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro River draws elephants, lions and leopards. Sundowners overlooking the river.

-Samburu's Special Five
-Ewaso Nyiro River wildlife
-Sundowners in the northern wilderness

Day 02

Full Day in Samburu — Arid Beauty

Dawn and afternoon game drives in Samburu and neighbouring Buffalo Springs. The riverine forest along the Ewaso Nyiro is prime leopard territory. Large elephant herds dig in the dry riverbed for water. The arid landscape, with the Ololokwe table mountain as backdrop, offers some of Kenya's most distinctive and photogenic safari scenes. Midday at camp — relax by the pool, watch elephants come to the river from the camp's viewing deck.
-Dawn leopard tracking
-Elephants at the river
-Ololokwe mountain views
-Poolside wildlife watching

Day 03

Samburu to Lake Nakuru — Rhino Country

Morning game drive in Samburu. After breakfast, depart for Lake Nakuru National Park. The drive takes you back through the central highlands, with a stop for lunch at a viewpoint overlooking the Rift Valley. Afternoon game drive at Lake Nakuru: rhino tracking, flamingo watching and the search for tree-climbing lions. Overnight at your lodge with views over the soda lake.
-Final Samburu game drive
-Rift Valley panorama
-Nakuru rhinos and flamingos
-Lake-view lodge

Day 04

Nakuru Morning & Onward to the Mara

Dawn game drive at Lake Nakuru — the morning light creates a pink haze across the flamingo-dotted lake. Track the park's rhinos and Rothschild's giraffes. After breakfast, drive to the Maasai Mara. Arrive at your luxury tented camp in time for an afternoon game drive. The Mara never disappoints — within your first hour, you are likely to see lions, elephants, giraffes and plentiful plains game. Sunset and sundowners on the Mara plains.

Day 05

Full Mara Immersion — Predators & Plains

Return to camp for brunch and a siesta. Optional Maasai village visit or hot-air balloon safari (supplementary). Afternoon game drive exploring the Mara River. Day 06

Mara's Southern Plains & Farewell Dinner

Visit a Maasai manyatta to learn about the pastoralist culture that has shaped this landscape for centuries. Afternoon game drive along the Sand River. Farewell bush dinner under the stars — a candlelit table in the middle of the African wilderness, surrounded by the sounds of the night.

  • Visa Prices, or similar
  • Why include Samburu rather than Amboseli? Samburu offers species that exist nowhere else in Kenya — the 'Special Five'. The landscape is dramatically different from the Mara and Nakuru — arid, with the Ewaso Nyiro River as a lifeline. It provides a more complete picture of Kenya's ecological diversity. However, if you prefer Amboseli (elephants with Kilimanjaro views), we can substitute it. All our itineraries are tailor-made.
  • How is this different from the Tanzania 7-day safari? Both are week-long immersions in East Africa's finest wildlife areas. The Kenya version is slightly more compact geographically — shorter drives between parks, more time on game drives. Samburu adds the unique northern species. The Tanzania version includes the unparalleled Ngorongoro Crater experience. Many guests do both on separate trips; they complement rather than compete.
