Seven Days in Tanzania: The Journey That Has Everything
Seven days gives you the freedom to truly settle into the rhythm of the bush. This itinerary includes every highlight of Tanzania's Northern Circuit, plus experiences that shorter safaris cannot accommodate — a visit to Olduvai Gorge, the cradle of humankind; a full day exploring the Lake Ndutu region where the migration calves in season; a sunrise hot-air balloon safari over the Serengeti (optional but unforgettable); and the luxury of time — time to linger at a sighting, time to follow a cheetah hunt, time to simply sit and absorb the enormity of the African wilderness.

You stay at hand-picked properties that are themselves part of the experience — a coffee plantation lodge in the highlands, a tented camp on the Serengeti plains where you fall asleep to the sound of lions, and a crater-rim lodge with views that seem to stretch to the edge of the earth. This is not a checklist safari. It is a week-long immersion in the greatest wildlife destination on the planet.;;;;

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival & Arusha — The Gateway to Safari

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Private transfer to your boutique lodge in Arusha, set in tropical gardens with views of Mount Meru. Afternoon at leisure — relax by the pool, explore the lodge's coffee plantation, or visit the nearby Arusha Cultural Heritage Centre. Evening briefing with your guide over welcome drinks, discussing the week ahead and your wildlife priorities. Welcome dinner featuring Swahili cuisine.
- Boutique Arusha lodge
- Cultural Heritage Centre
- Welcome briefing with your guide

Day 2

Tarangire — Land of Elephants & Giants

After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park. The landscape shifts from Arusha's green highlands to the dry, baobab-dotted plains of Tarangire. Full afternoon game drive. Tarangire's elephant families are the largest in northern Tanzania — it is not unusual to see herds of 200–300 individuals. The park is also excellent for lions, leopards and the rare fringe-eared oryx. Late afternoon, arrive at your luxury lodge with panoramic views over the park. Sundowners on the deck as the sun sets behind the baobabs.
- Tarangire's giant elephant herds
- Baobab-studded landscapes
- Lodge with panoramic park views

Day 3

Lake Manyara & the Ngorongoro Highlands

Morning game drive in Tarangire before departing for Lake Manyara National Park. The park's groundwater forest is a primate paradise — look for blue monkeys and olive baboons. The soda lake, when full, is a sea of pink as thousands of flamingos feed. After a picnic lunch, ascend into the Ngorongoro highlands. Visit a Maasai village to learn about the pastoral traditions that have coexisted with wildlife for centuries. Overnight at a beautiful farm lodge in the Karatu hills.
- Lake Manyara game drive
- Flamingo-dotted soda lake
- Maasai village cultural visit
- Highland farm lodge

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater — Full Day in the Garden of Eden

Dawn descent into the Ngorongoro Crater — the early start means you share the crater floor with very few vehicles. Spend the full day exploring this extraordinary ecosystem: 25,000 animals in a 260-square-kilometre caldera. Track the Big Five (black rhino, lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard). Picnic by a hippo pool. The crater is one of the few places where seeing all Big Five in a single day is genuinely possible. Late afternoon ascent to your lodge on the crater rim — the view from your room is unforgettable.
- Full day on the crater floor
- Realistic chance of all Big Five
- Picnic by hippo pool
- Crater rim lodge

Day 5

Olduvai Gorge & Into the Serengeti

Visit Olduvai Gorge — the 'Cradle of Humankind' where the Leakey family discovered hominid fossils dating back 2 million years. The small museum tells the story of human origins against the dramatic backdrop of the gorge. Continue into the Serengeti, game driving en route through the southern plains. Depending on season, this is where the Great Migration calves (January–March) — hundreds of thousands of wildebeest with newborns, attracting predators. Arrive at your luxury tented camp in the central Serengeti for your first sundowner on the plains.
- Olduvai Gorge — Cradle of Humankind
- Game drive into the Serengeti
- Migration calving (seasonal)
- Tented camp in the Serengeti

Day 6

Serengeti Immersion — Predators & Plains

Optional hot-air balloon safari at dawn (supplementary cost) — drifting silently over the Serengeti as the sun rises, followed by a champagne breakfast on the plains. For those staying grounded, an extended dawn game drive. After a relaxed midday at camp (pool, massage, siesta), an afternoon game drive exploring the Seronera Valley's kopjes — rocky outcrops that are prime leopard territory. The central Serengeti has Africa's highest density of predators. Sundowners at a scenic kopje as the sun sets over the endless plains.
- Optional balloon safari
- Seronera Valley predators
- Leopard tracking on kopjes
- Sundowners on the plains

Day 7

Final Dawn & Departure

One last dawn game drive — the Serengeti at first light, when the air is cool and predators are finishing their night's hunting. Return to camp for a farewell breakfast. Transfer to Seronera Airstrip for your bush flight back to Arusha, where you connect to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward journey. Or continue to Zanzibar for the beach extension you deserve.
- Final Serengeti dawn
- Bush flight over the plains
- Optional Zanzibar extension

Useful Information

  • Best Time to Go June–October for best general game viewing. January–March for the Serengeti calving season and predator action. The itinerary is outstanding year-round with seasonal variations on camp locations.
  • How does the 7-day safari differ from the shorter versions? The 7-day safari adds Olduvai Gorge, Lake Ndutu (seasonal), a cultural visit to a Maasai village, three nights in the Serengeti area instead of two, and the option of a hot-air balloon safari. The pacing is more relaxed — you never feel rushed between locations. It also allows us to position your camp based on the migration's exact location during your travel dates.
  • Is the balloon safari worth it? Our guests consistently describe the Serengeti balloon safari as a life highlight — not just a trip highlight. Drifting silently at dawn over the plains with wildlife below, followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush, is an experience unlike any other. We recommend booking it in advance as spaces are limited.
  • What fitness level is required? This safari requires no special fitness. Game drives are conducted by vehicle. The only walking is at your discretion — short walks at camps and lodges, the Maasai village visit, and the Olduvai Gorge museum. If you choose the balloon safari, you need to be able to stand for the duration of the flight (approximately 1 hour) and climb into the basket via footholds.
